I visited Barcelona a couple of years ago. Before this, I had only heard about the football team, so I wasn’t expecting a whole lot. But Barcelona was one of the most unique European cities that I have ever visited. This is mainly due to the architecture designed by Antony Gaudi. He was inspired by Renaissance history but gave it a new-fangled twist. Therefore, far from your usual run-of-the-mill gothic churches and cathedrals, the construction was outlandish and abstract. I highly enjoyed visiting these sites.
Barcelona was a very lively city as well, with jovial people, great weather during the summer, and amazing food.
Here are my top sites in Barcelona:
1) Basilica of the Sagrada Familia
By far the most distinctive cathedral that I have visited in Europe, the Sagrada Familia defines the idiosyncratic architecture of Antony Gaudi. The colors used are vivid, and the details are marvelous. It feels as though you are on a set of a Tim Burton movie, with a playful exterior.
2) La Pedrera
Another Gaudi masterpiece, this house merges in with a modern street in Barcelona. It’s defined by its curvy exterior and peculiar interiors. Would highly recommend going early as tickets get sold out fast and there is a limited occupancy.
3) Camp Nou
Although I am not a huge football fan, this stadium is worth a visit. You can feel the energy of celebrations that have occurred throughout its history. Great players such as Lionel Messi train here too.
4) La Rambla
This is a great shopping area located near the beach. It’s always packed with tourists and locals alike. You can shop for clothes, books, flowers — you name it. There are some great local restaurants here as well where one can even source vegetarian food. Head over there for an afternoon of fun.
You really need to go Barcelona, trust me you won’t regret it. The shopping isn’t all that expensive either, especially the shoes and bags. Have fun and enjoy!
