What happened to our race?
Were we always like this?
When you switch on the news, you only hear about murder, betrayal, theft, and many more disheartening stories.
Leave the news aside, people talk to each other so rudely on the internet. Especially on Youtube. Everyone thinks that they are safe hiding behind their laptops — but are they really?
Humans live as though they are the only individuals in the universe. Our ego does not permit us to see beyond ourselves. It doesn’t permit us to drop beauty products for the sake of animals. It does not permit us to stop overconsumption for the sake of a growing population. It does not permit us to live sustainably.
I’m a victim of this thing called “ego” too.
The most dangerous kind of ego arises when power is brought into the mixture.
A person with power and ego is deadly.
But rarely will you find one in power without ego.
Take several people in power who only want to prove a point and not actually benefit society.
Violence against humanity occurs on a daily basis. Violence towards our world’s plants and animals occurs on a daily basis. Violence towards ourselves occurs on a daily basis.
So what should we do?
I think we should start realizing we aren’t “individual” or can’t afford to be. Our consciousness is one.
It’s time we got out of our little bubble and start behaving how we were made to behave — like human beings.
Try saying hi to a stranger.
Volunteer to clean up the earth.
Give charity for charity’s sake.
Stop thinking only about yourself, but about the world.
Stop being stuck in your small events as they amount to nothing in the huge landscape of the universe.
Be something greater than you can be.
That is all.

So, I was hiking with a Ugandan and we passed by a baby mango tree that was suffering in the drought. The guy I was with gave the sapling his last drinking water. My lightbulb moment!! Africans take a LONG TERM view of life that westerners are no longer capable. We’re too separated from everything, we are so insulated by money and things we fail to see how all things are connected. He knows that mango tree will grow tall and feed many people. Me? I drank my water.

Excellent story. In Asian and African cultures a lot is given for living beings as a whole. It’s something we can all learn from!
